Navigating the Climb: Elevate Your Career within Your Current Company
February 15, 2024
Embarking on a successful career journey is much like scaling a mountain – challenging, rewarding, and filled with opportunities for growth. As you continue to carve your path in the professional world, we understand that path to ascend within your current company may not always be obvious. Why do some people seem to move forward with ease, while others struggle to get noticed?
Rest assured, while the ascent may not always be linear, there are some key actions you can take to improve your view from the mountain. We want to help all of you, as alumni chart the path that's right for you.

Define Options for your Next Camping Site:
It's easier to reach your next destination if you know where you are going. You don't need to know the full route of your climb, but you should know the next 2-3 places that you might stop next.

Communicate your potential next stops with your manager. This not only allows them to think of you when they see opportunities that align with your goals but it also signals your ambition and commitment to the organization's success.

Showcase your Skills for the Trek:
As managers are looking for professionals to fill out their teams, they have a tendency to find people who have done it before. Just imagine you are on a mountain climb. Would you like your guide to be someone who knows the mountain or someone who is figuring it out for the first time?

By defining your options for your next step, you can improve your insight into what hiring managers will look for in that job. Have a gap in your experience portfolio? Use the time before you apply to build examples so you can demonstrate that you deserve a spot on the expedition team!

Build Relationships Early:
Your professional network is your lifeline. The more people who know where you want to go, the more likely you are to get help on the way.

Foster meaningful connections with colleagues, supervisors, and mentors, especially if they are in the departments where you may want to work next. These relationships can provide support, guidance, and even open doors to new opportunities before they are posted as official roles.

The Bottom Line:
Remember, the journey to career advancement is unique for each individual. By incorporating these principles into your professional life, you can chart a course that aligns with your persona goals and aspirations.

Remember, the journey doesn't always need to lead to a higher elevation of career advancement. Sometimes the most interesting experiences come from hiking along at the same level and finding new inspirational views that can be overlooked.
